13 Lousy Bucks
This afternoon Kim Bouldin-Jones, Founder and Executive Director of Medical Facility Aid, spoke to our group about how poverty affects medical care in Africa. The children learned about hospitals without running water that are consistently filled beyond their capacity and where people stay in beds outside the hospital walls (despite daily rains.) The kids were saddened to see that countries such as Ethiopia spend just thirteen dollars a year, less than a typical American fast food run, per person per year on healthcare. It was a sobering talk, but one which also taught our children how they can help. Participating children will ask friends, relatives and neighbors to "sponsor" their participation in community service projects throughout the year to support Medical Facility Aid. The kids were enthusiastic about helping out and making a difference, and seemed pretty grateful about a lot of things they usually take for granted. I know I was.
