Corn!

In June we headed out to the farm to learn about corn. How to plant, harvest, shuck, store, shell, grind, cook & save seeds for the next year.

The kids helped plow the fields with a team of horses, then they seeded a field while pretending to BE the horses.

They learned that the kids on a farm had the most outdoor chores outside of field work - which made most of them pretty darn happy they didn't live on a farm 100 years ago!

After learning how & why corn cribs were built for maximum air and minimum moisture they learned how to shell the corn kernels into large metal buckets. They carried the buckets to the barn and using 2 different methods they cracked the dry corn for animal feed.

The highlight for most was the kitchen visit where they got to help churn butter, sift corn flour and enjoy some oven fresh corn bread from a wood burning stove - with just a touch of honey.
